In order to create sufficient support for the wings a steel frame surrounds the whole piece to which the wings will be attached.

The steel frame gives the whole work more stability and I can push on with massing in.

I am making progress on the life-size sculpture of Pegasus for the Airborne Forces and Parachute Regiment Memorial. The pose has been massed in and you see in the second photograph that I have started to work on the anatomy. Once I have a blocked in the main muscle masses and skeleton I will start sculpting the finished surface, hopefully catching as much life and movement as possible.

The sculpture of Yeats began last summer with a week of measuring, sketching and sculpting at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, where he stands as a stallion. This is the most important stage for me, as I was able to get to know the horse from watching him in his daily routine and then spend timespeaking to the lads and all those that know Yeats well. It was vital that I gained a complete picture of the horse from those who know him best as I was keen to capture the character of the horse as well as his physcial dimensions.

I had my own very strong mental image of Yeats parading around the ring at Ascot to add to this information and therefore I could establish a pose that married all these elements together. He always carried his head in a very distinctive way and later on in his career, as his neck developed, he became instantly recognisable. He is beautifully proportioned. From the side he is deep and powerfully built, especially through the shoulder: he is sinuous and yet every line flows with an effortless grace. From the front he is streamlined and slender: even his ears are close together when pricked. It is easy to see why he had so much success when one considers this combination of power and aerodynamism.

But the thing that really strikes me about Yeats is how he moves. He is almost regal in his head carriage and he glides over the ground effortlessly. I could not have had a better subject for my first life-size bronze.

Having made a one quarter scale maquette of Yeats I began work on the ten per cent over life-size version in October 2010. The process involves a steel armature, on top of which I added clay. Over forty bags were needed, which equates to more than one tonne. I used over sixty measurements taken from Yeats, along with video footage, my sketches and maquettes and also made trips back to Coolmore to see him and to refresh my eye. He took over eight hundred hours to sculpt.

I built a new studio specially for working on this scale so that I could have the room to stand back and see the work from a distance, which is vital. However, it is a very large space to keep warm and it was a constant battle against the cold to prevent the clay from freezing. Every night he was wrapped up in a New Zealand rug and sleeping bags.

Once I had come to a point where I thought I was getting close to being happy with the sculpture, the mould making could begin. This was done over the course of ten days by three highly skilled mould makers. He was moulded in seven sections (the four legs, head, tail and body). The moulds were then taken to the foundry and a combination of the lost wax process and sand casting were used to create the bronze.

I hope more than anything that my sculpture does justice to Yeats and that those who know him best will think that I have captured his presence and character. Yeats is an Ascot legend and I feel extremely privileged to have been chosen to sculpt him."

The maquette for Pegasus is now beginning to take shape. I'm trying to establish an angle for his body that suggests that he is taking flight rather than rearing up. The engineers will be coming the studio in the next few days to have a look at the maquette and from their recommendations a final pose will be established.

Today I began work on the 1/4 life-size maquette of Pegasus for the Airborne Forces Memorial.

I have decided on this scale as it will give me a good idea of the pose and expression of the life-size work and will also be invaluable to the engineers for calculating the optimum angle of Pegasus and also the areas which are under the most stress.

Mark Jackson (a good friend and fellow sculptor) and I have been commissioned to design and create a memorial to the Parachute Regiment and the Airborne Forces. The memorial will consist of two sculptures. A Paratrooper, (15% over life size) sculpted by Jacko, will be at ground level hauling in his parachute. Behind and above him will be a life-size Pegasus and Bellerophon taking flight (as in the old Airborne Forces badge). I will be sculpting Pegasus and Jacko will sculpt Bellerophon. Both sculptures will be cast in bronze and installed at the National Memorial Arboretum in 2012.

It is a project that I am hugely excited about. To be given the chance to create a memorial sculpture is an honour and I am extremely grateful to be involved in creating something so special.

Pegasus will be based on a thoroughbred but there is huge potential to be very creative with not only the form, but also the modelling. The wings, which will be around 9ft long, will give the sculpture an enormous presence and grace.

Royal Ascot

This year I attended all five days of Royal Ascot in my role as Artist in Residence to the Royal Ascot Racing Club. I had several works on display in the club and I thoroughly enjoyed being there with the members and experiencing some incredible racing. It was thrilling to see Highclere have three winners and the closest second, by a whisker, of the week. Another highlight was Paco Boy putting in the bravest performance of the week in the Queen Anne. He came from way back in the field having being caught up against the rail and showed amazing acceleration to hound the leader in a desperate attempt to regain his title. If he had had another 20 yards he would have got there. I look forward to starting the sculpture commission of him in the next few weeks.

2010 Investec Derby Trophy

It has been quite an amazing few months. The build up to the Derby started back in April with the first Derby Trial race at Epsom and the official unveiling of the trophy. Ian Balding was the guest of honour and I was extremely relieved when he voiced his approval of the design and the sculpture itself. Until that day it had been seen by Aspreys and a select few at Investec. I was very anxious about how the racing community would view the sculpture. I'm very relieved that all the feedback has been incredible and far better than I could have hoped for. I would like to thank Investec for giving me the freedom to create this work. It really has been a dream commission.

After the first Trial race on 21st April the trophy travelled the country, following the Derby roadshow. It appeared on Channel 4, Racing UK, BBC Breakfast, BBC One and The Morning Line. It was then displayed that the prestigious Derby Club Dinner before returning to its new home in the Queen's Stand at Epsom.

When I arrived on Oaks Day it really struck me just how brilliant it was to be involved in such a way with this amazing event. Oaks Day and Derby Day were incredible. The sun shone and the racing was thrilling. I've never seen so many people at one event before. The atmosphere was totally unforgettable.

The Epsom and Investec teams did an amazing job in moving the Trophy around the course for various interviews and presentations and it was fantastic to see so many people looking at the sculpture and remembering past winners which are engraved on the inside.

The Trophy was presented to HRH Prince Khalid bin Abdullah after his horse Workforce destroyed the Derby course in a record time.

To be a part of the Derby is something that I will be very proud of and extremely thankful for. Thank you Investec and Epsom.

Investec Derby Trophy

Investec have commissioned me to produce the perpetual trophy for the Derby.

"Perpetual trophies are an integral part of the Festival but the same has curiously been untrue of the Derby. Until now, winning connections have received a one-off memento rather than something readily identified with the race. Investec, the new sponsors, are about to rectify this.

Charlie Langton, the renowned artist, has been commissioned to design an iconic trophy, intended to represent the Derby just as the Ashes urn or the World Cup characterise those contests. It will be launched by John Oxx, trainer of last year's winner Sea The Stars, at Epsom's April meeting and then be taken on tour around the Derby trials."

The Jockey Club Whip

On 2nd October the first of the sculptures I was commissioned to do by the Jockey Club was presented at Newmarket's Rowley Mile. They have bought six sculptures (one for the next six years of the race). There are three Artist's Copies available. The sculpture, Rivalry, can be seen at the Tryon Gallery from 3rd-13th November.

Motivator

I was commissioned to paint the 2005 Derby winner, Motivator for Harry Herbert a few months ago and today I finish it.

It has been an amazing project to work on and definitely my most important work so far. It has involved a lot of driving up to the Royal Studs at Sandringham to see him, take measurements and create sketches. He is an amazing horse, both in his looks and character. He has had a colourful career with huge ups and downs and he remains a good tempered horse which makes him very special indeed.

The painting is 120cm x 150cm and Motivator is 1/3 life size. I have painted him in his summer coat which is somewhat lighter than it is currently. It will be on show at the Highclere Yearlings parade, which will be the real test. Fingers crossed!
